Google AI Overviews now appear at the top of most health and wellness search results in India. A patient searching "skin clinic for acne in Koramangala" sees an AI-generated summary before a single organic link. A patient searching "IVF specialist near me in Hyderabad" sees AI-synthesised recommendations before Maps results. A patient searching "how long does LASIK recovery take" sees an AI Overview drawing from multiple sources before any individual website appears.
This is not a future development. Google I/O 2026 unified AI Overviews and AI Mode into a single search experience that over one billion users now interact with monthly. And the data on what this does to clinic website traffic has started to appear — and it is stark.
Seer Interactive's research, cited by MGMA in May 2026, compared organic click behaviour on pages based on whether they were cited in Google AI Overviews or not. The finding has two parts, and both matter.
Part one: When a page is cited in an AI Overview — when Google's AI selects that page as one of its sources and links to it within the AI-generated summary — that page receives approximately 35% more organic clicks than it did before AI Overviews were introduced. Being cited in an AI Overview does not just maintain existing traffic. It increases it. The reason is that the AI Overview effectively endorses the cited page: it tells the patient "this source has reliable information relevant to what you asked." Patients who click through from an AI Overview citation are more engaged and more trusting of the source than organic traffic clicking on a link at position four.
Part two: When an AI Overview appears on a search results page but a specific page is NOT cited in it, that non-cited page receives approximately 65% fewer clicks than it did before AI Overviews were introduced. The AI Overview answers the question so effectively — and appears so prominently at the top of the page — that patients who receive an AI Overview response are significantly less likely to scroll down and click through to uncited organic results. The organic links below the AI Overview have become significantly less visible and less clicked.
Put these two findings together: if you are a clinic website that is cited in AI Overviews, your traffic is increasing. If you are a clinic website that appears in organic search but is not cited in the AI Overview that appears above your result, your traffic is declining by an estimated 65% versus your pre-AI baseline. This is not a theoretical concern. It is happening to Indian clinic websites right now, and most clinic owners have not connected their declining organic traffic to AI Overviews.
Google AI Overviews are not just a US phenomenon. Since the unification of AI Overviews and AI Mode at Google I/O 2026, AI-generated summaries appear for health queries in India across English and increasingly in Hindi and other Indian languages. Stanford HAI's 2026 AI Index found that 92% of symptom and common health queries trigger an AI Overview response.
In practice, this means: a patient in Pune searching "best physiotherapy centre near me for knee pain" sees an AI Overview naming one or two providers before any organic results. A patient in Bengaluru searching "how to choose an IVF clinic in India" sees an AI-generated guide before any individual clinic websites. A patient in Hyderabad searching "LASIK eye surgery price India" sees an AI-synthesised answer about cost ranges and factors before any clinic pricing pages.
For Indian clinic websites, this creates a binary situation. Either your website is cited in the AI Overview — and benefits from the citation's +35% traffic effect — or it is not cited and suffers the -65% decline in clicks from patients who received an AI Overview answer and did not scroll down to find your non-cited organic result.
Understanding how Google selects pages for AI Overview citation reveals exactly what infrastructure needs to be built. Google's AI system selects content for AI Overviews based on three primary criteria.
Entity clarity: Can Google's AI clearly identify what kind of clinic this is, where it is located, and what it specialises in? This requires MedicalBusiness schema (or a specialty-specific subtype like Dermatologist, Dentist, or Ophthalmologist) formally declaring the entity type. Without it, Google treats the page as generic web content rather than as an authoritative source on a specific clinic's specialty services.
Extractability: Does the page contain direct, standalone answer sentences that the AI can extract and cite without requiring the patient to read the full page? A procedure page that opens with "LASIK surgery at [Clinic Name] is a 20-minute outpatient procedure that corrects myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism using excimer laser technology, with a 98% patient satisfaction rate" is directly citable. A page that opens with "At [Clinic Name], we believe in changing lives through the gift of vision..." is not.
FAQ structure: Does the page have FAQPage schema applied to patient questions and answers? FAQ content with FAQPage schema is the most reliably cited content type in Google AI Overviews. Google's AI is specifically designed to surface direct answers to patient questions — and FAQPage schema presents exactly that structure in machine-readable format.
If you have access to Google Search Console, this analysis takes five minutes. Navigate to Search Results under Performance. Filter by Search Type and look for AI Overviews impressions — available since the Generative AI Performance Report launched in June 2026. Compare the last 90 days of total impressions and clicks to the equivalent period 12 months ago.
A clinic website that was receiving steady organic traffic and has seen a significant decline in clicks in the last six months without a corresponding decline in impressions is almost certainly experiencing the -65% AI Overview displacement effect. The impressions are maintained because the page still ranks — but the clicks are declining because AI Overviews are answering patient queries without patients clicking through to the organic result.
Iris by AdChoreo identifies AI Overview citation status as part of the six-dimension agentic readiness audit — specifically flagging whether a clinic's pages are being cited in AI Overview responses or displaced by them. For most Indian clinic websites, the finding is the latter. That is the gap the AI visibility infrastructure build closes.
